My Therapy Approach
Choosing a therapist can be a daunting process. From navigating insurance, understanding different licenses and degrees, determining therapist fit, and deciphering therapy approaches. To support in this journey, I aim to explain what a therapy approach entails, break down the ones that I use, and provide guidance for those exploring therapy options.
What is a therapy approach?
A therapeutic approach is a structured framework, grounded in science and theory, that therapists employ to assist clients with the challenges and symptoms they experience. Understanding a therapist’s chosen approach serves as a vital initial indicator of their therapy style and what clients can anticipate in sessions. All of the therapeutic approaches I utilize are evidence-based practices which involves using current scientific evidence and research to support efficient and effective client care. While I customize my treatment plans to meet each client’s individual needs, the following outlines my therapy approach, offering evidence-based structure tailored for symptom reduction and progress.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
CBT is a widely known modality that is effective in treating a range of mental health challenges including anxiety and depression, and is based on the premise that our thoughts influence our feelings and behaviors. ACT, a third wave behavioral therapy, compliments CBT well by incorporating values, mindfulness, and acceptance while also focusing on traditional CBT techniques like symptom reduction and cognitive restructuring. A core concept in ACT is psychological flexibility, which is essential for understanding mental health. It emphasizes maintaining adaptive ways of relating to oneself and the world despite life’s inevitable ebbs and flows, challenges and hardships.
Relational Therapy
At the heart of therapy lies the relationship between therapist and client. I believe that mutual understanding of the human experience is the foundation for therapy. The therapist-client relationships serve as a valuable tool for understanding the client’s relational patterns and dynamics. With a relational approach, therapy acts as a microcosm for how the client may be interacting in their everyday lives. Treatment is focused on understanding relational patterns and dynamics in the client’s life and exploring how these dynamics show up in the therapy space.
